What does newborn care include?

When you bring your newborn into Manchester Pediatric Associates, the team of specialists offers a variety of services for your child, including:

  • Circumcision
  • Hearing screenings
  • Physical screenings
  • Vaccinations
  • Nutrition assessment

They also offer a frenotomy procedure, cutting the lingual frenulum from underneath their tongue. If it doesn’t get released, it can restrict the tongue from moving, cause feeding issues, and cause discomfort for your baby.

What supplies do I need for newborn care?

The Manchester Pediatric Associates practice recommends you keep the following on-hand:

  • Thermometer
  • Nasal aspirator
  • Medicine dropper
  • Nail clipper
  • Baby comb
  • Cotton balls

The team can give you additional guidance on other items to include, as needed.

You should also keep your emergency information nearby, such as the poison control phone number, the closest emergency room, and your provider’s number.

What is a common condition that newborn care treats?

If you notice that the whites of your baby’s eyes and their skin appear yellowish, they might have a common condition called jaundice. It occurs when your child’s bilirubin levels are too high, which inhibits their ability to break down their red blood cells.

The condition usually occurs between the second and fourth day after they’re born. You can press your finger gently on their forehead or on their nose to see if their skin color looks yellow when you release your finger. If your baby’s skin simply looks a little lighter than normal when you pull your finger away, your child most likely doesn’t have jaundice.

Jaundice can go away on its own, usually within three weeks. But, if it lasts longer, your baby might have a more serious underlying issue and require an evaluation.

To treat your baby, the team at Manchester Pediatric Associates may supplement their nutrition or put them under a lamp for light therapy. Your provider talks with you about all the options based on the severity of your child’s jaundice.
