What is lab testing?

Lab testing uses blood, urine, or tissue samples to catch early signs of or potential risks for severe illness or disease. It can also assist with diagnosing medical conditions. Ultimately, the tests can identify specific health issues so your child can receive proper treatment, and they can also help prevent serious health problems from developing in the future.

When your child’s lab tests occur at the practice, you save time and get answers quickly. Not only does on-site testing prevent you from having to drive to another clinic or lab for testing, but it provides a diagnosis for your child fast so you can begin treatment early on.

What types of lab testing are provided?

The team at Manchester Pediatric Associates offers many on-site lab testing services, including:

  • Flu test
  • Diabetes screening
  • Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)
  • Strep throat
  • Vitamin deficiencies

Your child’s pediatrician orders tests according to any current or potential medical conditions of concern.

Is lab testing the same for all ages?

As your child grows and develops, your child’s pediatrician orders screen tests as their needs evolve.

The types of lab testing for different ages include:

Newborn and toddler ages

During the first two years of your child’s life, they have a recommended, frequent schedule of checkups with the providers at Manchester Pediatric Associates. During these 24 months of life, your child may have several blood tests to identify lead exposure and anemia.

Ages 3-9

Children 9 years old and under who have a family history of heart disease, stroke, or high cholesterol should undergo a cholesterol screening after the age of 2.

In addition, routine exams include testing your child’s risk for tuberculosis. If your child has come into contact with anyone with this infection, then they should be screened for it.

Ages 9 and above

Cholesterol screenings occur between ages 9-11 and 17-21. If your child is more susceptible because of family history, then more frequent testing should occur.

For sexually active teens, the team offers sexually transmitted disease (STD) screenings.
